Welcome to our blog!
This is the blog of the Strood Green Shop Association, an ever-expanding team of people attempting to launch a community shop in Strood Green, Surrey. The proposed shop, called simply The Shop at Strood Green, will be a convenience store with business facilities and postal services. We are going to advertise for a manager in a couple of months' time, and the shop will be staffed by a range of part-timers and volunteers.
The community shop is born!
On Wednesday 6th February 2008 Mole Valley District Council voted to allow a small development to take place at 1 Tynedale Rd, Strood Green, site of the former Strood Green Store. In return the new owner will be bound by a legal agreement, to offer in perpetuity (well, we've gone for the first 100 years at any rate) the shop premises to the community for a rent of ONE penny a year. Not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth, some of us from the war-torn Committee of 2005 (remember the Save the Post Office campaign?) have re-convened and have decided to meet the challenge. We know that community-run shops are a success nationwide, and we know our community desperately wants this one. Rural shops are in the decline but we still need them - so please give us your support!
